Bruce backs calls for openness on Iraq enquiry2.00.00pm BST (GMT +0100) Fri 19th Jun 2009 Malcolm Bruce, the MP for Gordon has welcomed the opportunity for MPs to debate whether the proceedings for the proposed Iraq Inquiry to be led by Lord Chilcot should be made public. MPs will have a chance to vote on the Iraq inquiry next Wednesday in the House of Commons after opposition MPs called for a debate. Mr Bruce said: "This inquiry cannot afford to be held behind closed doors. The public has waited a long time for answers as to why we were duped into a war whose legality is questioned. We need an inquiry with a clear and full remit which presents a genuine attempt at fact-finding and reconciliation. "Unlike the Kelly and Butler reports which were seen as flawed by many, this new inquiry must be free to provide answers to veterans, relatives and friends of those who lost their lives- whether civilians or military personnel- and to the public at large. "It is only acceptable for information where the revelation of particular pieces of evidence can be proven - through independent scrutiny - to pose a threat to national security to be held in private." ENDS Notes: On Wednesday 24th June MPs will vote on the Iraq enquiry (and whether proceedings should be partly or fully public- depending on the motion and amendment selected by the new Speaker of the House.)
